New work programme for building regulations published

The Communities and Local Government department have published plans to revise the existing building regulations which includes reviewing regulations for electrical safety.

The document called ‘Future Changes to the Building Regulations – next steps’ explains the proposed changes to building regulations which will take place from 2011 until 2013.

The work programme has been developed as a result of consultation with external stakeholders. During this consultation a number of concerns were raised around the costs for demonstrating compliance with the electrical safety regulations and the burden this placed on small businesses.

The building regulations in relation to electrical safety in homes (known as Part P) were originally introduced in 2005 and will be reviewed in terms of their original intention to improve home safety.
